HD DVD stands for 'High-Density Digital Versatile Disc'. HD DVD discs use the same blue laser technology as Blu-ray discs. The blue laser has a wavelength of 405nm compared with the wavelength of 650nm for DVD which uses red laser technology. This shorter wavelength means it is possible to write smaller data pits and therefore vastly increases the amount of data on the disc.
